What is the Universal Windows app?

A Universal Windows app is a software application written in the Windows 8 or Windows 10 codebase that can run not only on a Windows PC, but also on a Windows tablet, smartphone, smartwatch, or Xbox.

Universal Windows apps are designed to work the same on different form factors. For developers, the shared codebase works on almost any API, requiring only tweaks for display settings. This approach can ease the burden on the business, eliminating the need for developers to create custom code for different form factors running a Windows operating system (OS). The trade-off is that the shared codebase can also provide malware makers with a single, broad target, simplifying the task of creating malware.

The prevalence of the Windows operating system and the ability to run desktop applications on mobile devices is expected to increase the market share of Microsoft’s mobile platforms, especially Windows Phone.
