How to Create a Native Windows Application for Any Website or Web Application

Web applications are everywhere on the Internet these days. Whether it’s your email, a to-do list, or a social network, everyone offers their service as a web app accessible from a web browser. But if you’re someone like me who prefers native apps over some essential web apps, then this guide is for you. We’ve covered a free service called Web2Desk which allows you to convert any app to native Windows / Linux / Mac app and download it.

Web2Desk review

Web2Desk uses Nativefier behind the scenes. If you are new to Nativefier, you can go ahead and read about it here. Nativefier is a tool written in JavaScript that allows you to wrap any website or web application in an Electron container.

What is Electron?

Electron is a JavaScript framework based on Node.js and Chromium. It lets you run any webpage in a completely separate Chrome window that almost looks like a native app. Electron supports almost all platforms including Windows, Linux, and MacOS.

So what Web2Desk basically does is take a website as input and then use Nativefier to wrap it in an Electron container which gives you a native app that can be used on all platforms.

You can also use More native on your computer, but for that you need to have Node.js installed. And also, you should have a bit of knowledge about using command line tools. But you can ignore this entirely and let Web2Desk take care of it for you.

To start creating an application, go to Web2Desk. Enter the URL of the website / web application for which you want to create a native application. Now enter the name of the application. It should automatically detect an icon for it; if the icon is not suitable, you can download one. Now enter the email where you want to receive the download link and you are done.

Hit it Create now and the service would start building your application on its servers. Once the app has been compiled and ready to download, you will be notified by email. The estimated wait time is typically around 2-3 minutes for a Windows application.

You can either wait on the same page or open your email link to download the app. The download file size was approximately 45MB and the application is available in a portable format. You can open the extracted content and start your application from the executable file.

For more accessibility, you can pin the app to the taskbar or create shortcuts on the Start menu. Unfortunately, there is no option to create a variant of the installer, but you can use the existing tools to create an installer for the downloaded application.

Remember that applications created with Web2Desk or Nativefier run in a separate Chromium window from your existing browser or other applications created with Nativefier. You can use these tools to your advantage if you have multiple accounts for a website and want to run them simultaneously.

Web2Desk also offers you precompiled applications for some of the most popular web applications. These apps include Trello, Twitter, Asana, WhatsApp, Telegram, Spotify, etc.

Web2Desk is a great free service. It allows you to easily convert your favorite web apps to native apps. I love this service so much that I have converted almost all of my web apps like Gmail, GitHub, and even TheWindowsClub to a native app. They look exceptional on a computer and are great when it comes to performance.
